February, 2014 Vol. 25, Issue 6
The Brookfield Men’s Club will host their annual Anniversary Dinner Meeting on Monday, February 17, at a special time and place – 6:30 PM at the Baptist Church auditorium. The BMCers extend their usual invitation to community members to join them (and their offspring!) for what is always a terrific meal, and an entertaining program. The only caveat is that all BMCers that have not done so already, and any members of the public who wish to attend, must contact Mike at 673-2769 by February 12 latest, so the proper number of meals can be planned. Cost is $15/plate; we hope you choose to attend! Hopefully this meal will not have the soporific effect on the Eagle staff (editor/reporters) that the Christmas season turkey did, which contributed to an avalanche of miscues in the January edition. We apologize to any and all who were left scratching their heads at our stupidity. Heather MacFarlane’s husband is Greg Loewen; and we somehow transported her sister Sheryl several thousand kilometres east from BC to Newfoundland?!!? Lori Campbell-VanTassell’s business in Stewiacke is the Copper Barrel Pub and Eatery. Please forgive us; we will try harder.
Three former Elks hockey stars led the hospital parade — super-slick centerman of the 1960s powerhouse teams, Gerry MacWha, had hip surgery; his convalescence was much abetted with the return home of his daughter, Janet Taylor. Big defenseman, Jack Roop had a knee operation; he plans on being good-as-new for next year! Zach Sill hit the 20 game mark in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins, then was sent to the “Baby Pens” AHL team in Wilkes-Barre / Scranton – while there he had an opponent’s skate sever tendons in his forearm – his recovery is expected to be complete, but may likely end his season. Mary Henderson had a scare when she slipped on ice near her home, resulting in a broken hip–the unfortunate sidebar is that she was outside alone for an hour, on a very frigid night. Fortunately Terry and Lisa arrived from curling before permanent damage ensued, and her recovery is progressing. Leah (Benvie) Hamilton is progressing very nicely after having both hips replaced over the past five months.
Dave and Anitra Whidden visited family in Newfoundland; Brian Stewart and Sherry Cole chose the considerably warmer isle of Curacao in the Dutch Antilles. (Delta) Dawn Carter-Henderson and her sister Irene Morrisey vacationed in Cuba. Sarah Densmore is working in Grand Forks, British Columbia. Joan Campbell went to visit son Mac’s family in Ottawa. Norm and Val Taylor and family (sons Andrew, Aaron, daughter Juilienne, and spouses, and three grandchildren enjoyed Walt Disney World in Orlando. Our heartfelt thanks go to Shortt’s Lake residents, Roger and Barb Ryan, who sent a nice note and very generous donation to the Eagle from Fort Lauderdale!
A baby girl was born to Andre Garneau and Krysten Stewart in Quebec City. Grandmother Patty Stewart and great-grandmother Shirley Comeau made the trek to greet Sadie Jane. Great grandfather is Bill Stewart. Patrick and Petra Stewart welcomed their second daughter, Lainey, a sister for Sophie. Grandparents are Dan and Lexie Stewart, and Peter and Kathy Graham of Pembroke; great-grandmother is Pat Stewart. Belated congratulations to Hilary Paquet, who travelled to Nepal in late 2013 to work on her own time for Habitat for Humanity International. Hilary has now made five trips for this very worthwhile organization, the others being to Bolivia and Central America.
Multi-talented SCA student Karlee Burgess played second stone on the Nova Scotia rink that finished a very strong third at the Canadian Junior Girls Curling Championships, held recently in Liverpool. None of the team is more than 16 in the Under 20 event! The Brookfield Elks won the Bantam A division of a hockey tournament in St. John, NB. Locals on the team are Noah McCallum, Keegan Crowell, Cameron DeGroot and Cameron McLeod. The SCA senior boys basketball team, under the direction of hard-working coach Kyle Cormier, made it to the finals of their tournament, losing in the championship game to a terrific Hants North team. Members of the Wolves are Brad MacKinnon, Ryan Duykers, Alberto Serracin, Jordan Eastman, Travis Mercer, Matt Joudry, Colton Beach, Carl MacKay, Jacob and Jordan McKenzie, Morgan and Garret Johnson. Another SCA student making big waves is Eastville’s Kylee Graham. This very personal and beautiful Grade XII student is the only representative from Atlantic Canada in the Miss Teen Canada competition. Kylee is multi-talented; she plays on soccer, basketball and hockey teams, performs Highland dance, writes poetry, paints and sketches, is an Honours with distinction student, teaches young children to skate and reads to children with mental disabilities. She has grown up on a sheep farm, and will attend university next year, hoping as a career in veterinary medicine. On line voting is part of the criteria; this is definitely an incredible young lady we can get behind. To learn more and see the pretty photos, and to cast your vote (frequently, we hope!) go to http://www.misscanadatm.com/kylee_graham.html. (under score between kylee and graham). Please vote for this very charming young lady!
Crystal Lake Drive’s superb talent James Hill is back in the studio – recording an album is expensive, exhausting, and completely amazing. You can be part of the fun by pre-ordering your copy of James’ new CD. It’s a great way to support our local musician[s], plus you get exclusive perks when you pre-order! Find out more at www.jameshillmusic.com/PatronOfTheArts. James and his wife Anne Davison recently gave a bravura performance in Truro at a fundraiser for Archway Counseling. Another prominent musician originally from the Trenholm’s Lake area is Dale Fisher — he was honored for 40 years of exemplary service as a driver of big rigs for Fisher Transport. Dale is a highly-valued employee – he and his family were recognized at a get-together where Dale was presented with a beautiful steel guitar! Several BMCers enjoyed a tour of the Stanfield’s factory in January, marveling at the building and equipment, and seeing all that is involved in knitting, dyeing, cutting and sewing apparel. The Brookfield influence at that company has been reduced with the retirement of Vice Presidents Mike Henderson and Andrew Sears, leaving with over 60 years of service between them – they and their families had a nice send-off at the Truro Golf Club. Condolences go to Susan Stevenson and her siblings on the passing of former Carter Road resident, Byard “Rub” Carter, in Truro. Rub also leaves brother, Gerry, and many grandchildren. At Elk Court, former Musquodoboit Valley resident Mildred Stewart, mother of Vicky McCoul passed away. She was grandmother to Lana MacKay and former Elk slugger Bob MacKay. Vicky had earlier lost her sister Helen Weir of Harmony. Lauretta Hamilton, formerly of Upper Stewiacke, passed away at Elk Court. Brookfielders mourned the passing of Ida Lib Adams in Tatamagouche– she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Marion Smith, and sister to Roberta Smith, and spent most of her formative years in the downtown core. Annie Dickey of Lower Truro died – she was a sister to the late Marie O’Hanley. The All Around the Circle Seniors Club will hold their monthly luncheon on Tuesday February 18 at the Sportsplex – come enjoy a good meal and friendship. “Sweet Treats Bingo” will be held at Elk Court on Saturday February 15, from 2 – 3:30 p.m. Prizes are cakes, pies and home-made sweets!! Bingo cards can be purchased at the door or by contacting Recreation coordinator Janice Sanford @ 650-3303. Proceeds are for recreational activities for Elk Court residents. Leah Roop is conducting Yoga classes on Thursday at the Fire Station – 5:30-6:30. Joanne Hatfield is offering a beginner class for aspiring ukulele players – call 673-2227 for more information.
The BMC Ladies Night will be Monday April 21: the BMC is now accepting nominations (until March 20) for the 2014 Eagle Award, given annually to a person or persons who make our community a much better place. Pass along nominations (feel free to include supporting info) to Committee Chair Charlie Burnett (673- 2302), the Eagle at the e-address below, or to any BMC member. The Brookfield Athletic Association held their annual meeting in early February, and while the organization is healthy, it was noted that all of their major fund-raisers (Whing Ding, Sportsmen’s Draw- nee Big Game Hunt, hockey pools, and Elks Golf Scramble) all had reduced profits in the past year. The BAA very much intends to keep up their support of sporting activities, especially at the grass-roots level in funding Minor Hockey, Figure Skating, Club Volleyball, Junior Curling and Golf, Minor Ball, and athletic programs at our local schools, etc. You can help by supporting these programs–you will have to hurry to get in the Olympics hockey pool (closes February 11), but the NHL weekly ones will resume after Sochi. The Golf Scramble and Whing Ding both take place in July, and you can get your Sportsmens’ Draw tickets from August ‘til early November. The BAA is accepting nominations (until May 30) for the 2013-14 Randy Roop Memorial Award, annually presented to one who has made major contributions to our community’s sporting legacy–past and present. Contact Terry (673-2106) or Kim (673-2298) with nominations. The Great Community Curling Classic will be held at the Brookfield Curling Club March 28-29-30. This fun-filled event welcomes curlers of ALL levels, from neophyte to grizzled veterans, and is a great way to get into this wonderful game. Contact Lisa (673-2106), Pibb (673-3262), Mike (673-2769) or any BCC member for more info.
The Brookfield Community Assembly, (BCA) in partnership with Colchester County Recreation Services will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation night on April 28, 2014; we would appreciate it if any non-profit organization or group would nominate a person or persons from their body to receive a Volunteer Award. Please contact Susan Smith of the BCA Recreation and Leisure Committee at 650-2107 or Susan Stevenson at 673-2479 before March 23.
What do you think about walking and cycling in Brookfield? We want to hear from you! Be part of an exciting people-powered (‘active’) transportation project. Tell us…What holds you back? What would motivate you to walk or bicycle in Brookfield? Write your ideas on the community chalkboards at the Brookfield Bakery & Hurricane Heidi’s, MacQuarrie’s Pharmasave, and the Sportsplex until February 22. Also, plan to join in the county-wide conversation about “What gets you places?” (enjoy live music and treats!) on February 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at First United Church Hall (corner of Queen and Lorne) in Truro. What we learn will lead to a public survey in the spring and a special project this summer, supporting our community to be healthy, connected and liveable. This county-wide project is supported by the Municipality of Colchester and several other partners. Visit www.whatgetsyouplaces.cato learn more and to see what others are saying about getting around their community.
The 2014 dates for Homecoming are July 19 to July 27; Whing-Ding will be July 25 & 26. The Coming Home to Brookfield Coordinating Committee has started making plans for the 19th year! In order to continue the family focused celebration of community, it is necessary to do some rebuilding. Your help would be WELKCOMED in any of the following ways: – joining the Coordinating Committee, offering suggestions, volunteering for any of the sub-committees, working on logistics etc. If you have pictures or clippings from past years that might be of interest for the 20th Anniversary Yearbook, or you want to help in any capacity, call Judy at 673-2427
