Brookfield
N.S.

P.O. Box 195 BON 1CO
April 2010 Vol. 19 Issue 8

When the March
edition
of the Eagle
went to press, little did we realize we were on the brink of one of the
warmest and earliest Spring seasons in most people’s recall.  The
Valley of the Little River has been blessed with abundant sunshine and warm
temperatures, most of which seemed 5 weeks early, but few are
complaining.  Not far from here in the Cobequid Uplands, those who
wanted to ski and snowmobile had lots of snow.  Who would have
thought
one would be golfing in Nova Scotia one day, and skiing the next, but
many did and enjoyed pleasant conditions for both!  Brookfield
Men’s Club thoughts have turned to the annual Ladies Night Gala,
where they will host a large number of ladies from the community and the
surrounding area for a full- fledged meal and entertainment, with the
evening capped off by the presentation of the BMC Eagle Award to a
deserving citizen of our community.  Doors will open at Knox United Hall
at 6:30 PM on Monday April 19 – please accept our invitation.

The BMC would like to thank Kathy
Putnam and some of her fellow members of the Tai-Chi Society for
providing the program at the BMC’s March meeting.  They kept the
members enthralled throughout their presentation and explained the more
peaceful martial art, which provides undeniable health benefits to its
practitioners.  It was quite a sight to see some of the BMCers
being led through some of the Tai-Chi movements!

A Big thank you go to Beth (Retson)
Brogan who made a financial donations to the Eagle from her winter home
in Mesa, Arizona.  Beth has since had the good fortune to return
to her summer home in Dartmouth, which makes Arizona pale by comparison.
We would like to correct a couple of oversights in the March issue – re
the Truro Sport Heritage Award dinner, we neglected to mention that
Maria Rutherford was a member of the Colchester Cyclones (midget
hockey) that was a finalist for the Female Team of the Year honour, and
Liam Fitzgerald, son of popular SCA Science Teacher Ted, was a very
deserving finalist in the Male Athlete of the Year category.

Talk about two dynamic accomplishments by one individual in a very short period of time –
Alicia Stewart, daughter of Brian and Tammy, won the Provincial
Championship in the Open Five Girls (i.e. the top category) at the Nova
Scotia Gymnastics Championships.  She was second in the vault,
first on the bar and beam, and second on the floor, and gold medalist
overall.
A few days earlier, Alicia won the Nova Scotia High School championship
in snowboarding for SCA at Martock!  This young lady is indeed a
fantastic athlete!  Alicia’s teammate Katrina MacKenzie, who had
won the Regional snowboarding title, was unfortunately injured in training for
the provincials, still finished a very strong 5th for the Kelly
Spencer- coached team. Back at Gymnastics provincials, Erin McCavour,
whose parents Jeff and Cheryl are known to many Brookfielders through
their activities in hockey, volleyball and curling, was the overall
bronze medalist in the Argo Two Girls category, and won first place in
the bars competition.  The SCA team under coach Dave Clarke made a
very strong showing at the provincial mixed curling championships – the team
included Jonathan Crouse, Taylor Clarke, Lucas Dawe, Sarah Sears and
Regan Bowers.  The SCA Junior High Boys travelled to Regionals
with coach Charles DeBay – that team included Jacob Bowers, Jamie O’Connell,
Jarrett White and Jonathan Fisher.  The closing Funspiel winners of the Junior
curling
Isaac MacDonnell, Connor Murdock, Hunter, Jay, and Carter
Redmond, while Four Foot Club honors went to Jarrett White, Emily
Melvin, and Olivia Hernden.  Sixteen members of the junior program
received their Skills Achievement Badges.  The Spring Spectacular
Spiel(ne Great Community Curling Classic) saw as winners in the Industry
division the YW Resources team of Laurie Cochrane, Clary White, Tom van
Oirscoht and Gary Doyle; the Institution Division was won by the
Woodpeckers team of Bruce Stewart, Colleen Brothers, Dave Steeves, Amy
Stewart, and Kim O’Donnell.  The Business Division was won by the
Brookfield Elementary School team of Don and Cathie MacIntosh, Courtney
Winters and Karla Armsworthy.  Skip Don MacIntosh, a former
provincial senior champion, also won the Draw to the Button contest.  His
wife Cathie is principal at BES, and that family has more good news as their
daughter Kelly was the mate on Paul Fleming’s rink which won the Nova
Scotia Mixed championship and will attend the Nationals next
November! I’m not sure the word dynasty has been used in educational pursuits
before, but that is near what Biology teacher and leader of the SCA Science Fair
program Gaye MacDonald seems to have established in the Chignecto
Central Region as they once again, captured the Leading School
award.
Two SCA students will attend the National Championships in Peterborough
next month, namely Natalie Fisher for her Gold Medal in the Senior
Health category “Is its Bark Worse than its Bite?”, and in the Senior
Life Science category Student Council President Emily Taylor for her
gold medal win entitled “The Pressure’s On”.  Other Gold Medal
winners were German exchange student Justus Wolf (Intermediate Health), Senior
Environmental Science gold medal Cody Smith; Special Award medal
winners included Best Visual Display by Kristina MacKenize,
Participants choice, Charlene Locke, Jamie Sheppard Memorial award
Kristina MacKenzie.  Other medal and / or scholarship winners from
SCA included Katelyn O’Connell, Amber MacLean-Hawes, Jessica Conrad, Linnea
Bigelow, Rebecca O’Connell, Megan Wright, Sarah Sears, Alex Fleming,
Maria Rutherford, Jennifer Brenton, Martha Horsman and Kaylee
Allinson! Another gold medal of note in the Environmental category was Ben Lynds
with his project “Is My Well Water Killing Me?” – the Bible Hill Junior
High student is the grandson of Robert and Doreen Matheson and son of
Jeff and Shawn.  Great news for former SCA grad (’06) Karla
Armsworthy the popular Carter Road resident, who will graduate with her B.Sc this
spring from Dal, has been accepted to that institution’s medical school
program! – a fantastic accomplishment for this fine community-minded
citizen!  Adam Burrows, grandson of Gerry Burrows was a big winner
on The Price is Right.  The Brookfield AAA Midget Elks
wrapped up a bittersweet season by capturing the Gold medal in the
SEDMHA international tournament, with Drew McNutt scoring the winning
goal in overtime.  This event has long been considered the class
of tournaments, and it was impressive to see the Elks team win this after
the hardships the team has suffered this year.  A tribute to the
players and to coach Patrick Stewart.  The Junior Elks hockey club
concluded a thrilling season with a Game 6 overtime loss to the Bay Ducks in the
Division Finals of the N.S. Jr. Hockey loop.  The Elks worked
tirelessly through two long series, against Sackville and St. Margaret’s Bay, both
had several overtime games.  Coach Josh Boulton’s team included
many locals such as Coady Read, Josh Taylor, Lucas Dawe, Neil Works, Jimmy
Scullion, Avery Withrow, Justin Smith, Chris and Doug Armsworthy, and
workhorse Ike Burgess, who completed his junior eligibility after 6
years with the Elks.  We also wanted to acknowledge the strong
performance by Forest Glen resident Cole Fielding, (parents Jeff and
Stephanie) – he was a force and one of the leading scorers in one of
the Truro Atom AAA Bearcats who won the N.S. Championships in Cape
Breton.  The Wynn Park Wildcats won their division of the Nova
Scotia Women’s League title – among the locals on the squad are Anita Fisher,
Della Boyle, Katrina Wallace, Sonya Aikens, Chelsea Colpitts, Erin
Crowell, Kathy and Holly Dean, and the Reads – Bev, Allison and
Meghan. The Colchester Cyclones Female Hockey program continues to churn out
winners – the Bantams won the provincial title, bolstered by Assistant
Coach Jeff McCavour and players Madison Clarke, Kate McCavour, Abby
Boutlier, Emilee Burris.  The Midget Cyclones lost in overtime in
the provincial finals – on that team was Maria Rutherford, Regan Bowers and
Kaleigh Queripel, Barb Stone, Marlee Coldwell, and Tiffany MacDonald.

A baby girl was born to Mark and
Michelle Walters in Alberta – a granddaughter for Everett and Margie
Walters and Jack and Beverly Vissers.  A son was born to Cory and Aimee
Lester of Shortt’s Lake; Aimee is a BCA member and Cory a strong
goal-tender for the Cruise Missiles hockey club.  Emily Kierstead
and Don Murray welcomed a grandson born in Parrsboro to Emily’s daughter,
Lisa and husband Stuart McCully.  Tim and Joy Wynn have a new baby
boy, a grandson for Shirley and Lawrence Wynn.  Congratulations! Jodie
Matheson was recently certified as a Can-Fit-Pro personal training
specialist. She is available at the new fitness facility
ShockConditioning at 105 Walker Street in Truro – this offers boot camp
style workouts, group / individual training, yoga, Zumba, spin classes,
Qi gong, nutrition guidance, and massage therapy.  For more
information check out the website www.shockconditioningsystems.com.
Andrew Gordon, grandson of former Brookfielder the late Earle and Anne Gordon, and
native of Porter’s Lake was named to the American Hockey League’s
second All-Star team.  The Washington Capitals prospect finished
10th in league scoring!  Kelsey Harpman daughter of long-time SCA teacher
Cheryl Harpman was named Female Athlete of the Year at NSAC.  Danica
Ellis won the Canadian Kickboxing Championship in the 119-125 lbs women’s
division by claiming a decision over an Ontario fighter. Her husband,
Ryan Ellis, won his bout by decision, and her brother Mitchell Cooke,
won his fight with a second round stoppage.  We definitely don’t advise
getting “lippy” around this threesome! Obviously people
jetting off to sunny climes made their bookings before the wonderful spring settled
into Nova Scotia, or they could have stayed and done their tanning
here.  However, Lil Gauthier spent a week in Florida with her
family, as did Jill and Rachel Sears.  Richard and Ellen Sutherland, Dave and
Janice Peterson went South.  Lorraine and Allen Carter went to
Cuba, while the Dominican Republic attracted Sandy and Trish Nelson, Danny
and Lexie Stewart, Greg VanTassell and Chad Works and Andrew and Becky
Roop.   Austin and Debbie Ross also went to Florida as well
as Heidi Cooke, while Ed McMillian travelled to Las Vegas.  Sheila Johnston
went to Ottawa. Brenda Geddes is happy to back in Brookfield after spending
a winter in Arizona with her daughter Teresa’s family.  Betty
MacFarlane went to visit Krista and Blair Tucker in Newfoundland.
Maureen Foster went to Calgary to visit daughter Brianna MacLeod and
Becky Wallace and her cousin had a star- crossed trip to Pittsburgh in
an effort to see Sidney Crosby’s Penguins play the Maple Leafs –
unfortunately some sloppy work by the American Boarder Services Patrol
prevented them from getting there in time for the game!  Twenty five grade 12
students made a marvelous trip that took them to Austria, Italy,
Germany and Switzerland, under the leadership of History teacher Gary
Renouf – among the travellers were Kaylee Allinson, Connor Baker,
Samatha Barr, Linnea Bigelow, Rachel Bowers, Katherine Carter, Laura
Fudge, Darren George, Emily Hiltz, Courtney Holder, Stephanie Prest and
Emily Taylor.  Their itinerary would take them around three sides of
the Alps and also feature a somber trip to a former concentration camp at
Dachau.  We wish happy trails to Alfred Bond who has retired as
principal of SCA to better attend to his wife’s serious health
problems.  Alfred is a kind-hearted man – we wish them both
well. Myrna Matheson broke her wrist skating with her grandchildren; and man-about
town, and bon vivant Brian Chisholm suffered a heart attack – get well
soon!We are sad to report
on the passing of Robert Henry, husband of Shirley, and father of Angie (Jeff Cameron)
and Carolyn Johnson…. Fulton Isenor of Elmsdale, (Bruce’s father);
his family has provided Brookfield with much wonderful music… and
long time Birch Hill resident Elmer Taylor.  Ted Pryor, a very
popular
restaurateur, and father of Joanne Stewart died – Ted could whip up a
meal with the best of them and had a positive outlook on life.
Elmer
Archibald’s sister Ellen Shea died in Truro – she was the wife to
former Elk defenseman Keiller Shea.  Annie Archibald’s brother,
Gerald
“Jud” Geddes died in Milford.  At Elk Court, Elva Fisher,
matriarch of
the large Fisher family of Alton, passed away.  Udvella “Jackie”
(Messervey) Webster Behan’s sister passed away in Halifax at the age of
101.  We send sympathies to all who mourn the loss of loved ones.
Always nice to
see some of the “Campbell” cousins home, and by the looks of both, they will be adding
to the diaspora from great grandparents E.G. and Adelaide – Laura
(McCallum), Shane and Ella Grinton were home to Pat and Herb’s, while
Sherry, Jay and Charlotte Ovsenny came from Toronto to Randy and Betty
Roop’s.  Turk Henderson winged in from Calgary to try to win
another banner at the Curling Classic; however his teams came up short in that
pursuit.   Wedding bells will ring this June for our long-time
typist of the Eagle, Cindy Fraser
and her beau Alex Bonin.  Debbie
Ross’ daughter Amanda Ettinger, was engaged to Tony Newman in Port Hawkesbury, and SCA
Volleyball coach Teri Kennedy became engaged to Layton “Loaf”
Theriault, who serves in the Canadian Navy at Esquimault – they will be
married in BC in May.  Ed and Edna Graham celebrated their 60th
wedding anniversary midst a crowd of family and friends – daughter Ivy and
husband Frank Haasen made the trip home from Ontario for the event.

Reminder to all of the Volunteer Recognition Reception being held by the BCA in conjunction with their
Annual Meeting on Monday April 26 at 7 PM at the FireHall.
The public are encouraged to attend – come and enjoy some refreshments and
congratulate many of the people who keep our community moving forward,
they have been named as award recipients by many various
organizations. Ironically, the BCA is in need of three volunteers to fill vacant
positions on the Assembly, the organization that does so much for the
village.  If you would be interested in helping out here, please
call 673-3390 or 673-2769, or email mhenderson@stanfields.com.  On Saturday
May 1, the BCA will again organize the Community Clean-up day –
the hope is we’ll have many more volunteers this year, and allow us to
cover far more streets and roadways than we have in the past.  The
clean-up takes a few hours Saturday morning – meet at Knox Church
at 9 AM and bring a pair of gloves; your other needs will be provided.
Minor Softball program is in need of coaches for the summer
season- registration can not be set until this is finalized, so any
interested in helping coach, please contact Julie Walters at 673-2678. If a
sufficient amount of coaches come
forth registration will likely be held around the middle of May – watch
for more announcements then.  This program fielded teams in four
age groups last year, and was great to see the young ones enjoying
themselves at Elk Park.  The South Colchester Community Health
Board will partner with the Brookfield Men’s Club for a presentation with Dr.
Martin Dzierzanowski – “Dr. D” is the Chief of Surgery at the
Colchester Hospital, and his presentation will be on screening for
colon cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer related
deaths.  He is an exceptional speaker and the Health Board is
pleased that he can come to Brookfield and continue his commitment to educating
the public about colon cancer.  The presentation will be Monday,
May 17 at 7PM at the Fire Hall in advance of the Men’s Club’s closing
meeting. There is no admission charge, and refreshments will be
served. presentation will include a question and answer session.  Come
and learn more about how you can best become educated and hopefully greatly
reduce the risk of this scourge.Upcoming
events at South Colchester Academy – the SCA bands will present their Spring Concert
on Monday,
April 26, 7 PM.  On May 18, 19 and 20, the SCA musical theatre
group will be presenting a new musical, written and performed by the
students.   Get ready for a hilarious presentation of
“Hercules”!  On May

GrandPrixWrestlingCircuit – come and see the eternal battle between
good and evil!  The Circus returns to the SportsplexJune9-10, watch for more information in the upcoming weeks.  Coming Home toBrookfieldcelebrations are set for July 17-25.Lafarge is
instituting a combination health improvement / weight loss challenge for
and/ or businesses.  Details are still being finalized – watch for
announcements soon – but they are hoping to attract “teams” of 10-15 members for a 6
weeks weight loss challenge, with an attractive prize package for all
members of the winning team!  Teams would be evaluated on their
total % loss. The initial weigh in at Lafarge will be Monday May 5;
with the concluding scale reading on Wednesday June 16.   A VON
Nurse will assist, and plan on capturing vital core statistics such as blood
pressure, cholesterol, resting heart rate, etc., that will enable all
to better appreciate the health benefits.  Start forming your
teams now at your workplace, organizations or any other grouping.  Contact
Lafarge (673-2281)for more details.

A reminder to all about the Calendar of Events section on the Brookfield Community Assembly’s website
please feel free to pass along information to bmceagle@eastlink.ca
or bmceagle@live .ca.  If all our organizations begin to use
this, it will make planning easier for many, avoid unnecessary date conflicts and
keep everyone better informed.  Let’s work to get all organization
postings on the calendar at www.brookfieldnovascotia.ca.
Of course the event on that calendar with the gold stars around it is again the BMC annual Ladies
Night- Monday April 19 at 6:30 PM at Knox Church – Don’tmiss it!
