Volume 28, Issue 8

Spring is here!! (???) – or at least it will be! And that means one thing for sure – Ladies’ Night at the Brookfield Mens Club!! ALL women of the community and area are invited as the guests of the BMC to a dinner, some fun, entertainment, door prizes, the presentation of the prestigious Eagle Award, and a peek at what these knuckleheads do! Mark it down – we don’t want you telling us “I forgot” – the date is Monday April 17, time is 6:30, place is Knox Hall. Bring an appetite, a friend, and a cheerful spirit!
The March BMC meeting was highlighted by a presentation by Andrew Sears on the trip he and daughter Rachel, brother Luther, niece Sarah, and sister Hilary Paquet made to the Dominican Republic to construct a pair of homes under the auspices of Habitat for Humanity. (We apologize for the incomplete listing of attendees in the March Eagle.) His talk and slides were very inspiring; much credit to the selfless Sears family for giving of their time and effort to make it possible for some to actually own their home, something that seemed unattainable. Well done gang! It was nice to see Jim and Marlene Feener’s daughter Adinda Kunder home for a visit from Ontario – Adinda had her three lovely daughters, Arianna, Cheyenne, and Brianna with her. Kelly Hazelton was home from the Oshawa area to visit her mother, Edith Watson. We send along Get Well wishes to Susie Smith; she is recovering in hospital, and grateful for those who visit her in hospital. From Indiana comes the exciting news of a son, Christopher Lance, born to B J and Kera Sutherland in Indiana! Grandparents Pete and Vicki Sutherland headed to the Midwest state soon afterwards! Speaking of golfers having sons, in the Ottawa area, Jonathan and Carrie MacKenzie also have a new baby boy, Caleb! Kim and Donna MacKenzie are the proud grand-parents; Bessie MacKay and Grace MacKenzie are the great-grandmothers. Sherry and Brian Stewart traveled to Red Deer, Alberta to see their first grand-son, born to her son Devin. Brookfield Elementary School teacher and Brookfield Golf Club member Kurtis Porter whisked Krista away to Cuba for their wedding. Desha Ellis and Rob Wells (not “Ricky”!) have purchased and moved into the former Mailman home on Bell Road. Congratulations to all as they enter new stages of their lives together!
Rollie Stevens, a native of Forest Glen, and goaltender for several teams, including the Brookfield Elks, passed away in Truro. Marie Leonard of Brentwood died – she was mother to Janie Greene. Ralph Graham of Upper Stewiacke died – his wife Phyllis and daughter Shelley reside here. In Giant’s Lake, Mary “Annabelle” Kennedy passed away – she was mother to former Brookfield Curling Club member John Kennedy (his spouse is the former Judy Maguire). Reta Langille died in Onslow – she was a sister to the late Merle Putnam, the Elks’ first Senior level pitching star. Former Hamilton Ave. resident and one-time Elks first-sacker, Bob Storr died in New Brunswick. We extend condolences to those who lost loved ones.

The Brookfield Curling Club wrapped up its 41st season – seems incredible that “the roaring game” has been part of a community’s fabric for that long! At their Awards Banquet, league championship teams were honored: Monday – Leroy Burns, Troy Taylor, Andrew Webb, and Donald White;Tuesday – Andrew and Jill Sears, Mike and Kyle Henderson;Thursday – Kirby Densmore, Paul Kean, Glenn Ferguson, and Terry Henderson. The 28th Annual Great Community Curling Classic drew 32 teams to the BCC – champions were: Brookfield Athletic Association Division – Jessi Taggart, Steve Murray, Herb and Josh McCallum;Tim Isenor Royal Lepage Divison – Jeremy Veinotte, Kris Terrio, Matt Dickinson, Nathan Toner;Jeff Miller Auto Parts Division – Laurie Cochrane, Clary White, Tom Van Oirschot, Gary Doyle; and the Open Division – Andrew Sears, Nevin Jackson, Gord Forshner, and Vince Jack (with help from subs Jill Sears and Becky Shearer!). Lisa Henderson was named winner of the Turk Henderson Memorial Award for long-term, meritorious service to the GCC Classic. Layton Rutherford and Doug Cox shared the newly-minted Sherill Burns Award for dedicated support to their family curling members. The Junior program named Carter Redmond as winner of the Josh Melvin award for dedication and most promise and Alexa Roop as recipient of the Rupe and Mary Fisher Award for showing love of the game. Annie Archibald was delighted to win the BCC’s draw for an authentic Sidney Crosby #87 Penguins’ sweater – “my favourite” per Annie. The BCC thanks all who volunteered their time and energy to help make the season a success – we would love for more of our neighbours to join us come October. A big thank you to Barb and Roger Ryan for sending a heaping helping of bird seed to the Eagle…it took a circuitous route from whence it was mailed in Fort Lauderdale – evidently the USPS is not the equal of Canada Post, as they sent the letter to Broomfield, Colorado, before it ended up here. Who knew the Florida – based post office would not recognize “Brookfield, N.S. B0N 1C0” as a valid address?!? The Brookfield Bantam Elks thrilled a large crowd at the Sportsplex, edging the Glace Bay Miners 2-1 in a sudden-death Northern Conference final. This advanced them to the provincial championship against Shelburne in Bridgewater, where they lost, but finished second in the province. The Elks have locals Matt Murphy, Ethan Densmore, Evan McNea, Will Richards, Will Dingle, and the MacMillan twins, Jonathan and Eric as key contributors, as well as a solid goaler in Connor Rushton. Ed MacMillan is an assistant coach. Sarah Matheson (Win, Ruth) came back from the North American Country Music International competition in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee (in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains) with two awards! She was named winner in both Adult Vocalist, and Best Entertainer (New Country) in the International Adult Division winner. She was bolstered by guitar whiz Tim Ross, who accompanied her (as did Tim’s wife, Lorraine). Taylor Clarke (David, Carla) was voted the Laura Lee Kearns Visionary Award by her classmates in St. Francis Xavier’s B. Ed program. Congratulations Sarah and Taylor! Also at X, Jessica Miller (Melanie, Steve), grand-daughter to Harry and Letha Mowatt, was named the basketball’s team rookie of the year. Mexico’s warm climes attracted Dave and Janice Peterson, Richard and Ellen Sutherland, Alton and Lorna Sutherland, and Greg Sutherland and Joan Adey. Krista Williams and Jim Pearson spent their vacation in Jamaica. Sisters Lynda Deyarmond and Kathy Graham went to the tropical paradise of Hawaii where they met Lynda’s daughter, Miranda, while Jean Mercier traveled further west to get to the Far East (Japan)! The Dominican Republic was the holiday spot of choice for Dan and Lexie Stewart, while Josh Archibald and Dr. Karla Armsworthy jetted to Portugal. Cuba’s warm sands lured Lee Nelson and Ashley Charette, as well as Kim and Macey MacBurnie, and Ardith Ross. Maureen Foster strayed from the resorts to explore the back country of Cuba, much of it with an innovative taxi driver who repaired a punctured tire with condoms! Darrell and Gail Wright, Daisy Hingley and Myrna Clarke went to Florida; Patty Stewart and Rob Smith went to Nashville. The families of Johnathan Woolfitt and Charlie Weatherbee tackled the alpine trails at beautiful Mt Tremblant while the Kierstead family checked out the hills at Mont Sainte Anne. The BMC is considering publishing a second edition of “The Eagle’s Flight” – many of the Eagle’s readers enjoyed the compendium put together after the original “Eagle’s” (D B Henderson) passing in 1977 – that book gathered Eagles from the first 40+ years of the BMC. Nearly four decades have passed, so the combination of the BMC’s 80th Anniversary, and the Canada 150 celebrations, make it ideal to compile a second edition of the BMC – and more to the point, to encapsulate the village and area’s history in one tome. BUT – we need your help on a couple of fronts. Some issues have gone astray in the past forty years – we have heard that some of our loyal readers save their copies – if you could loan them for us to have reproduced we would be most grateful. The period from 1982-1991 has a few missing issues. Obviously for the project to proceed, we need to have most copies available, so please contact Robert Putnum at EMAIL or any of the following: Nancy (phone), Susan (email) or Mike (phone, EMAIL) if you can assist – it will be most appreciated! The second thing we need to gauge is the level of interest – this is NOT a fund-raising effort, and we plan on selling the book at close to cost, but the BMC’s limited bank account means we cannot afford to estimate how many to produce, and then not sell them. So, to be clear – a commitment is NOT needed right now, but if you know you want to purchase one or more (they make great Christmas gifts!), please contact one of the above – ideally we would have your responses by the first of May, as a ‘go-or-no’ decision will be made at the May BMC meeting. Responses can also be made at https://bmceagle.wordpress.com/ OR on facebook at the Village of Brookfield, OR at http://www.brookfieldnovascotia.ca The minimum that we can order is 50 copies; we hope to sell them for $25/copy – that number may get lower if we get an enthusiastic response! Thanks in advance – for anyone who has copies we may need, and for those who make their intentions to purchase known soon! On April 22, from 9 AM – 4PM, at the Sportsplex, the Women That Hunt are hosting their 2nd Annual Mega Youth Expo. This was a raging success last year, drawing over 570 adults, 1100 youth, and 56 exhibitors. The goal is to expose youth of ALL ages to new activities related to the outdoors, fitness, art, community programs, nutrition and overall better health and wellness. This year’s plans will see exhibitors with terrific displays in both the hockey and the curling rinks, and also in the parking lot. Every exhibitor provides Door Prizes, and admission is only $5 (free for kids!). Be there, or be square! The Lower Pleasant Valley Cemetery Committees annual meeting will be held April 23rd at the Brookfield Fire Hall between the hours of 1 – 3. This is a very small group of local volunteers, most who have a vested interest in the continued care of this cemetery which according to local historian Pauline Carter was first founded around 1879. The LPVC was founded in 1999 with the aim to maintain the cemetery, expand and improve it while working towards having it become a perpetual care cemetery. All of this requires volunteers and ideas on how to raise funds and thus this meeting is open to anyone who likes to get involved a few hours a month during the summer to help with the maintenance and who might have ideas on how to create more funds. As well if there are persons who might be interested in investing in this cemetery there is lots of room for that as well. All are welcome.

The Brookfield Community Assembly Annual General Meeting will be Monday April 24 at the Fire Station – the public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Watch for the BCA’s announcement on the date of the Community Clean-up Day, likely in the early part of May. Bob and Jean Lawrence and Austin and Debbie Ross attended a meeting in Joggins to gather information about the Adopt-A- Highway Program. The BMC have “adopted” Carter and Whidden Roads and will soon approve plans for the spring clean-up, which would ordinarily be coordinated by the BCA Community Clean-Up Day – watch for more info on the date on the community website, facebook page, etc, or contact Terry Henderson (phone). If you are able to lend a hand, it will be much appreciated. The Brookfield Railway Station and Heritage Society will again be hosting a Fish-a-Rama at the Wetlands Trails on the morning of May 27 – more info will be provided in the May Eagle. For any not-for-profit groups who provide food services at their events, Food Handlers Certification courses will be held at the REC Centre in Truro on April 19, May16, and June 13. These are well worth having your volunteers attend; more info can be obtained by contacting the RECC.
The All Around the Circle Seniors Luncheon will be on April 18th, meal at noon, meeting and entertainment to follow. The AAtC hosts 45’s and Cribbage at the Senior Citizens room at DHM Sportsplex Wednesday Evenings. Everyone welcome. They also host their Drop in/Drop off 1-4 on Monday’s. If you want to come and have some fun, drop in for some games or just chatting. For a change of time contact Flora at phone or Jocelyn phone or check us out on Facebook All Around the Circle Seniors Group.

We hope all have happy and peaceful Easter observations–the holiest time in the Christian world’s year.
We hope to see lots of you at Ladies Night, April 17, 6:30 PM!

October 2016
Volume 28, Issue 2
The Brookfield Mens Club (BMC) opened their 80th season in September; there was a good turn-out to hear guests Colchester mayoral candidates Christine Blair and Bob Taylor express their visions and desires re leading the county after the Municipal elections on October 15. After the politicos were done, the business meeting, lunch, and good humour followed. The next meeting is Monday October 17, 7:30 PM, at the Fire Station – hope to see you there.
Big thank – yous are extended to many, who again demonstrated why our community punches above its weight. The Terry Fox Run featured over 200 participants and volunteers, at the run at Carter Falls, and the Bar-B-Q at the Sportsplex, where Cherry Lane shared their wonderful musical talent. They were assisted by special vocal talents Josh Cochrane (grandparents Bill, Bonnie), and Colombian/SCA exchange student Santiago Osorio Vasquez. The Terry Fox Committee raised in excess of $31,000 this year for cancer research! Wayne Woolfitt exceeded the $50,000 mark in lifetime pledges – he is hanging up his sneakers on a very high note after receiving a plaque from the Committee. Dan and Kathy Dean are hosting international student Vasquez, as well as Yuki Onoda of Japan; Don and Shanda Cameron of Shortts Lake have Hannah Betzler of Germany and Derin Cakir from Turkey (the latter showing promise for the Wolves female volleyball squad!) with them. Thanks also to the volunteers from the Terry Fox Run Committee, the BMC, and others, as well as South Colchester Academy students and staff, led by Kelly Spencer, all of whom combined to provide a very special welcome to the Kids Ride for Cancer that stopped at Ed Creelman Park. The cyclists and their support staff were overwhelmed by the Welkcome they received in Brookfield.
The BMC want to thank again the Forest Glen Greenhouses (proprietors, the Thompson family) for their donation of flowers that so beautified the park this year – truly FGG is a very community-minded operation! They will again be featured during the House Tours. Speaking of cyclists, what more can be said about Chris MacDougall’s epic trip on a bike from Vancouver to St. Johns – the sojourn took over two months, and raised in excess of $200,000 for the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute, who named Chris an Honourary Member of the institute. A tip of the hat goes also to the organizers and supporters at Brookfield Elementary School’s Fun Fair, which attracted a very large crowd. The local Dr. Annie Hamilton chapter of the I.O.D.E. hosted the Northern Nova Scotia Area conference. Guest speaker was Janet Maybee on her award-winning-book on the Halifax Explosion. One of the New Glasgow attendees is the grand-daughter of former Brookfielder Jimmie Lockhart and would visit here from Merigomish at Christmas time, to the farm at the end of what-is-now Crystal Lake Drive. Her brother is Leonard MacNeil, and he is father to Karen (Mrs. Chris) MacDougall and cousin to the late Harold Ellis. He shared the times that relatives Percy and Irene Lockhart who lived on the current site of Tyler Medaglia/Heidi Cooke house, always were the last to arrive at the family gathering, despite living less than 3 miles away!
Scott Glinz and Shanda Cox became husband and wife in a very nice ceremony beside the Little River, while Dane Henderson and Danique Rowsell exchanged vows and rings on the shore of a mist-enshrouded Shortt’s Lake in a sunrise service. Best wishes to both happy couples. Scott’s sisters Elizabeth and Sarah, and uncle Robbie were back in Brookfield for the nuptials. Danique’s parents Hardy and Yasmine came from Middleton for her wedding, then left for a two year job posting in Germany. Stan Wood won the Match Play Championship at the Brookfield Golf Club, and Darren Peterson recorded a Hole-in-one there. Dr. Frank Schenkels, a former soccer coach at SCA, was named the Bovine Practitioner of the Year by the American Association of Bovine Practitioners at a ceremony in North Carolina. Frank is a highly regard veterinarian, and has always been at the forefront of practices to improve the health of dairy cattle. Frank and Luanne (who coaches volleyball at SCA and at the Club level) and children recently moved from Fort Ellis to Shortts Lake. Erica Sullivan (Eric, Stacey, grandparents Jim, Donna Sutherland) won first in her 4-H confirmation showing her ewe at the Pro Show, a very prestigious placing. Letha Mowatt became a great-grandmother when Yan’s son Zack Palmer and Bobbie Deuville had a baby boy, Cayden.
Joy Wasson, daughter of Betty Carter and sister to twin Janet, Irene, Lenny and Dawn, passed away – at 62, a very sad development. We are also sad to report on the passing, after a long bout with illness, of former Carter Road resident, Kelly O’Neill of Upper Stewiacke. Her beautiful daughters Kayla and Carley are known to many from their very pleasant demeanour at the Brookfield Bakery / Hurricane Heidi’s. Dennis Wright, known to many for his alter ego, McGruff, the Crime Dog, passed away – he was the spouse of Alena Wasson. Debbie Crowe’s father, Guy McNutt, died in Truro – he was also grandfather to Catelyn Stewart’s hubby, Kenton McNutt, Jr., as did Effie Graham – she was the late Lawson Joudrey’s daughter. Judy Tomlinson of Brentwood, wife to Laurie, and mother to Janet, passed away. Our condolences are extended to all who lost loved ones.

Wilma Avila was home from California visiting with her sister Edna Graham and other family members. Larry and Mark Kennedy timed their visit to son/brother Peter’s Minneapolis home ideally – they took in the exciting Ryder Cup action at nearby Hazeltine Golf Club. Daughter/sister Jill Kennedy went to Switzerland and Dawn Carter-Henderson went to Alberta. Jim and Marlene Feener, were joined by Daisy Hingley on a trip to Newfoundland. Dane Henderson made a couple of trips to Windsor Salt’s North American headquarters in Chicago. Former Brookfield Rural High School chums hit the road – leaving our fair burg were Shirley (Ross) Comeau and Judy ( Henderson) Matheson (Thelma and Louise ??!!?); they picked up Aerolynn ( Stevenson) Greene in Riverview, N.B., and met Shirley’s sister Elaine (Ross) Healey at Riviere du Loup, then toured the Charlevoix. Patrick Hazelton (Jeff, Janet, grandparents Don, Doadie) umpired at the Canadian Senior Mens Fastball championships in St. John’s, Nfld. The 26 year old was given the home plate assignment for the final game – a huge vote of confidence.
Sandy Barber is recovering from neurosurgery. Margie Crossman has also had a rough go of it, but is on the way back to good health. Bobby Fisher and Kelly MacKenzie were hospitalized as well. Bobby Sill injured his knee but, poled his way through the Cape Breton Highlands on crutches, and still bagged a moose. Freda Sutherland broke her wrist, and Brad Little broke his ankle.
Brookfield Elementary School are continuing with their Veteran Memorial Flags program. Flags must be ordered by October 15, and will be displayed in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day. Before the next Eagle takes flight, the Brookfield Athletic Association’s (BAA) EIGHTIETH ANNIVERSARY Sports Draw will be made on Monday, November 14 at 5:30 PM on Cat Country 99.5 FM radio. All should make sure they have their ticket well before that date. If you are local, tickets can be purchased at most any retail outlet; if you are at a distance, you can buy online at brookfieldathleticassociation.ca. Many former Brookfielders have already done so-don’t be left out on the chance to win some of the $43,000 worth of Grand Prizes! The Brookfield Curling Club will start its 41st season with an Open House, which all are invited to the weeknights of October 24-28, 7-9 PM, and also the afternoons of October 29-30 (1-3 PM). Instruction, equipment, and fun are all provided free of charge – stop in and give it a try for the first time, or if a former player, ‘come see us now’! Help support SCA Athletes – if you dine at the new Boston Pizza location in Truro, write “South Colchester Athletes” on back of your receipt and B.P. will donate 5% of sales value back to SCA! Please take a second to do so.
The Remembrance Day service will be held Friday, November 11 at 10:45 AM at the Veteran’s Memorial. The BMC play the lead coordinating role in this; if anyone wishes information, etc on laying wreaths, or otherwise taking part, contact Bob Lawrence at 673-2022 or at bobandjeanlawrence@gmail.com. A wonderful lunch will be provided to warm the bones after the service at Knox United. The BMC will be coordinating the Halloween Street Patrol on the 31st – anyone wishing to lend a hand can meet at the United Church from 8:45 – 10:45 PM. The Brookfield Garden Club is hosting their 4th Annual Community Wreath project. If you had previously purchased an existing bracket on the utility poles, you may obtain a new wreath for $35; new orders for wreaths and brackets are $75. You must have order and payment in by November 1 – call or email Elsie at 650-2028 or eandjlocke@gmail.com. The brackets will be up by mid-November. On Saturday October 29 there will be an adult Halloween dance and costume party at the Curling Club from 9PM – 1 AM, featuring the music of GlennBoB (G R Matheson, who did such a good job entertaining at the Whing Ding) & the Boot, as well DJ B-FISH (Brent Fisher). Proceeds go to the Sportsplex. There will be a concert Saturday November 5, 7 PM, at Knox featuring Sarah Matheson. The freewill offering will help fund her trip to Nashville to enter in a singing competition. The UCW committee that organizes the terrific Christmas House Tours (this year November 25 and 26) is still looking for homes to be decorated – call 673-2427 for more information.
On Saturday October 8, the Moderator of the United Church of Canada (UCC), the Right Reverend Jordan Cantwell will be at Know United Church, participating with the youth group in activities. The following day, she will lead a combined church service of all the United Church congregations in our area – this to be held at the Audio-Visual Auditorium at CEC in Truro at 10:30 AM. It is expected to attract 1000 attendees, as she is a terrific speaker! The Moderator is the highest position in the UCC. On Sunday October 30, the MY-U group, which features youth from throughout the Maritimes, will present the church service at Knox, titled the Apocalypse Party! Brookfield Baptist Church has started a group (AWANA) for youth from Grades Primary to 6; they welcome all to come on Sunday evenings from 6:30- 8:00 to enjoy the scripture-based program, including games, singing and fun . Please note on Thanksgiving weekend only, AWANA will move to Monday night (Oct 10). The BBC is also forming a community choir for a Christmas musical – practises are 6:30-7:30 on Thursday evenings, and are open to all.
Thanks to all who supported the BAA’s World Cup Pool. won by former Elks twirler, Jim Johnson. Canada rolled to a convincing victory. NHL weekly pools start October 17-21, play for only $2 tickets at Roop’s Esso or BAA website.

The Brookfield Elks of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League had their home opener on October 6; they defeated the East Hants Penguins, 5-3 and now have a record of 2-2 under new head coach, SCA teacher, Kevin Aucoin. The Elks home games this year are most every Thursday nights – stop in to the Sportsplex and root them on. The Elks organization is partnering with the Sportsplex, so you can play Chase the Ace while attending the game! No need to miss any of the action on the ice, while still having a chance at a big pay-off! The next All Around the Circle Seniors Luncheon will be Tuesday October 18 – doors open at 11:30, meal at 12 Noon. AAtC card parties go every Wednesday night at their lounge in the Sportsplex, starting at 7:30 – you can play cribbage or 45s for only $2 admission fee. AAtC Seniors Drop In – Drop Off Friendship & Activity program continues on Monday afternoons from 1-4 PM. Enjoy puzzles, games, coloring, and refreshments. Check out the new FaceBook group at AAtC Seniors. Remember the Municipal election is Saturday October 15 – you can vote for either Christine Blair or Bob Taylor for Mayor of Colchester; District 2, which includes most of Pleasant Valley, Shortts Lake, Green Creek and Oaks is contested by Shawn Duffy and Bill Masters. Our School Board district has a new representative – Reg Pauley was acclaimed. Many are watching the slow-motion train wreck that is the presidential election campaign in the USA – seldom (never?) have been their two such polarizing candidates. See you at the BMC on October 17!

December 2010

The November meeting of the Brookfield Men’s Club was hosted
by the Brookfield Fire and Emergency Services – after the
normal business meeting, Chief Rod Nielsen, assisted by
fire fighters Steve Harris and Everett Gero, gave a
detailed talk on infant and child booster seats in
vehicles. They highlighted the proper use of these, and
how vital they can be in preventing injury to young
members of our society. The Clubmen were given
demonstrations of seat installations; and then had an up
close look at the BFES’ brand new pumper truck.  Returning
to the meeting room, a wonderful lunch was provided by
David Archibald and Ruth Matheson.   Ruth needs brushing
up on her fire prevention, as in an effort to quickly thaw
the butter pats, she instead sparked flames inside the
microwave! – fortunately they were quickly extinguished
with only the loss of 3 or 4 butters.
The December BMC meeting will be held on Monday
December 20 at 7:30 PM and will feature the BMC’s unique
Christmas party. Lively games, perhaps some carol singing,
too much food, and the famous gift exchange will take up
most of the night.  Any are welcome to attend – please
bring along a gift for the exchange that costs less than
$10.  Items for the Food Bank will also be welcome.
Speaking of Christmas gifts what better for anyone on your
list than a “Property of Brookfield Elks” T-shirt that are
on sale at MacQuarries.  These T-shirts come in red or
gold, have logo, front and back. A wonderful gift for fans
or anyone involved in any of the ball or minor hockey
programs, as participants or supporters.  Get them while
they last!
The 74th Brookfield Elks Sports Draw and Sportsmen
Contest winners were announced – the number one prize of a
2010 Colorado 4×4 extended cab truck or $25,000 in cash
was won by Michael Byrne of Scotsburn.  The other grand
prize winners were Kim Langille of Tatamagouche who won
the ATV, John Smith of Nuttby won the $2,000 Sobeys gift
certificate,  Matthew Boyd of Truro won the generator and
Ron Maskill won $500.  The salesmen prize went to Jim
Smith.   On the hunt side of this unique contest, which
will mark 75 years in 2011, the heaviest buck weighed 251
lbs and was bagged by David Dennis of Westville, while the
heaviest doe was a whopping 188 lbs, weighed in by Vernon
Carter of Pugwash. Brad Yuill of Truro won the Archer’s
prize, and the Ladies winners were Alicia Schroeder (230)
of Dartmouth and Samatha McCormick (137) of Pleasant
Valley.  Mark MacDonald of Saltsprings claimed both the
longest antler (29.75) and most points (24); while Donald
Bonin of Upper Stewiacke had the widest rack (26″). Thanks
to all who support this crucial Brookfield Athletic
Association fund raiser.  A big pat on the back goes to
Paula Serracin, who in her first year at Cape Breton
University, helped the Capers to the AUS Championship
defeating host Acadia 4-0, then Dalhousie 2-0 in the semi
final, before blanking UPEI 1-0 in the final. The Capers
advanced to the National tournament in Charlottetown.
Paula was a standout for the SCA Wolves on the soccer
pitch, as well as on the softball diamond during her high
school years, and is a delightful person – well done
Paula!  Carter Road’s Mark Kennedy of the Gutter Done team
is in 2nd place in the scoring race in the West Colchester
Men’s Hockey League, with his neighbour up the street,
Patrick Stewart of the HAF Skate and Tattoo team,
(comprised almost completely of Brookfielders), close
behind.   Andrew Gordon of Porter’s Lake, has just been
called up to the NHL’s Washington Capitals from the AHL’s
Hershey Bears – Andrew is the grandson of the late
Reverend Earle and Anne (MacLennan) Gordon – Earle was one
of the BMC’s founding fathers in 1937!   Sheila Sears
qualified for the National Hospital Accreditation Team, a
tribute to her professionalism in her career in Public
Health Nursing and other health care work.  Sheila is
living in Antigonish.   We are happy to announce that Sean
and Tania O’Leary had a baby boy Thomas, a grandson for
Sharon and George O’Leary and great grandchild for Alice
O’Leary and Shirley Harrison.  A baby girl was born to
Julie Locke and Clint Oakley – proud grandparents are
Wendi and Rick Locke and great-grand dad is BMC Clubman
Donnie Locke!  Congratulations to Wes Morrell and Bev
Toole, who were married recently.  South Colchester
Academy named their athletes of the month for November –
they were volleyballers Brandon Verboom, Kelsey Geddes,
Jared Schenkles, and Hillie van der Schaar. The Senior
Boys volleyball team advanced to the Provincial
Championships, held at Horton High – while not achieving
the success they had hoped for the team made great strides
this year under head coach Tim Delaney, who was ably
assisted by former university players and former Wolves
Mark Dean and Robbie Crouse.  The team consisted of Aiden
Schenkels, Dennis Nolan, Gregor Dawe, Joe White, Christian
Roy, Braden Cruz, Matthew Verboom and seniors Jesse
Eldershaw, Brandon Verboom, Riley Giffen, Alex Delaney and
Drew McNutt.   The Senior Girls volleyball team hosted the
provincials at SCA – they came up short as well, as
Bridgewater claimed their 4th straight Division 2 title.
This year’s team marked the end of coach Teri (Kennedy)
Theriault’s successful five year run as Wolves coach.  She
will be relocating with her husband Layton in Western
Canada.   Nice to see Cy and Emmy Miller’s grand-daughter
at the provincials as part of a strong Middelton High
team.  At the D-1 Boys tournament in Truro, Horton High
lost a close final to Sackville- the Valley School was led
by outstanding performances by Glen Stewart’s son and
step-son, Drew Stewart and Sam Bishop.  The Brookfield 4-H
club’s float won 1st prize in the “Club” division of the
Truro Santa Claus Parade – well done!!
Over 500 people gathered at the Veterans Memorial in
front of the Fire Station for a moving Remembrance Day
service coordinated by Bob Lawrence of the Brookfield
Men’s Club, and led by Reverend Larry Harrison and Pastor
Eric MacKinnon.  It was a beautiful day and heartwarming
to see a good turnout despite the local media seeming to
do all possible to not let anybody know the event was
happening!  A band consisting of Connor Murdock on
trombone, Julia Hamilton on the French horn, Riley Rankin
on the flute, Gabrielle Clark and Peter Betts on trumpets
played the anthems, while former SCA Music teacher Holly
Hartlen played the Last Post and Reveille on the trumpet.
More than thirty-five wreaths were laid during the
service!  Many of the large crowd descended on Knox Hall
for a wonderful lunch after the ceremony.  Both Brookfield
Elementary School and SCA hosted very well-done
Remembrance Day services – these comments from non-school
adult personnel who were present.  BES music teacher
Sheila Miller did an excellent job on this project – and
on the recent Christmas Concert, which drew overflow
crowds!  The last weekend in November saw the famed
Christmas in Brookfield House Tours – heartfelt thanks are
given to the homes / stable / greenhouse owners for
spreading the Christmas spirit to all those who attended
the 15th annual tours.  Approximately 180 folks from near
and far attended despite the persistent rain on Friday
night.  Many, many thanks to homeowners Ruth Campbell,
Anita and Darren Miller, Keith and Kathy Best, and Judy
and Lee Thompson of Forest Glen Greenhouses. The Train
Station was also decked out and hosted suppers both
evenings and the gingerbread house contest.   Winners of
that were Doreen Frank, Paige and Olivia Hernden and Julie
and Anna Hamilton.  We also want to thank all the
businesses, groups and individuals who gave so generously
to the Christmas Index Program as part of the House Tours
program, as well as those who participated in the Craft /
Artisan Sale at Knox Hall coordinated by Jean Lawrence.
We are delighted to announce that both Brookfield
Elementary School and South Colchester Academy have
received formal accreditation for their continuous
improvement plans from the Nova Scotia Department of
Education. This lengthy four year process, worked on by
administration, staff and school advisory councils at both
schools, saw those who helped put many, many hours into
the project.   Among those heavily involved were Principal
Cathie MacIntosh and Lisa Gogan at BES, and Brian Sears,
Doug Perry and Bianca Blair at SCA.
Our list of obituaries is much too long this month.
Among those who passed away were former BMC Eagle Award
winner Eileen Forsythe, who contributed much to the
community in her younger years, including development of
Camp Kiwanis in Forest Glen, a lot of time spent with
Ground Search and Rescue, the Children’s Aid Society and
the Scouting movement.  Ethel Smyth of Shortts Lake passed
away – she was Howard’s wife of 64 years, and mother to
Valerie Williams of Shortts Lake and mother -in -law to
Sharon Smyth.  The staff at SCA mourned the passing of
Lynn Ross, wife of popular teacher Chris Ross.  Lynn, who
taught at Truro Junior High, was an effervescent sort –
she leaves this mortal coil far too soon at 44.  A friend
to many, and all-round great guy Dick Hayden also went to
his reward.  The Shortts Lake resident and Mount Allison
and Boston U grad (he was a hoops star for the Mounties)
served on the Sportsplex Board of Directors in years past,
and will be missed by many.   Smiley Lauther, father of
former Elks slugger Ross Lauther and grandfather to Jr.
Elks winger Brett Lauther, died in Truro.  Archie Mitchell
of Shubenacadie passed away- he was the father of Darlene
Parker; and Muriel Smith’s son Ted Rector died in
Dartmouth.  Bruce Beeler of Lantz, father of Doris Isenor
and grandfather of Bruce Isenor passed away – he was known
to many for his musical works, particularly in the
bluegrass.   Karen Gibson of Hilden passed away, leaving
behind husband Robert and sons Aaron and Shawn Hinton.
Sherman Ryan of Glenmore died, his sister- in- law was
Audrey Ryan.  Shirley Sears sister of long time Brookfield
educator and non-pareil hockey coach Bill Sears, died in
Parsborro.  We extend sympathies to all who lost loved
ones.
Keiver and Bev Read, Dan and Kathy Dean and Bill and
Della Boyle attended a Maple Leafs game at the Air Canada
Center – was it just a coincidence the Leafs beat the
Bruins that night?  If not, we may have to make sure there
is a Brookfield connection in the stands for each Toronto
game!  Jack Roop, Troy Sutherland, and Josh Taylor
travelled to New York City to watch Jack’s Giants thump
the Washington Redskins in NFL action.   On their way home
they stopped in Foxboro to watch the Patriots pound the
Jets in a Monday night matchup with major playoff
implications.  We are very relieved to learn that none of
the guests at Josh Smyth’s wedding celebration in Cancun
were injured in the explosion at the resort where the
festivities took place.  Among those in Mexico for the
ocassion were Josh’s brother Jake, Cory Sutherland, Gary
Ellis Jr., and Chad and Jamie Works.   Among those home
for visits were Karla Armsworthy from Memorial University,
where she is in her first year of medical school, and Tina
Murphy to visit with parents Bill and Barb. Kailee Ingram
was home from her studies at UNB for a few days as she
wrestled with a nasty bout of pneumonia.  The Eagle would
like to express gratitude for funding support from long-
time reader Reta Dunn (the Eagle hopes former SCHS English
teacher Reta does not grade too harshly on his fractured
syntax), and to Peter and Kelly Hazelton from the Oshawa
area – thank you all!  We would like to pass along thanks
from the Baptist Church Youth Groups to all who helped
them collect 655 pounds of food for the Colchester Food
Bank.  Keiver Read is the incoming Chairman of the Board
of Directors at the Don Memorial Sportsplex, following
outgoing Chair Logan Rutherford, who provided exceptional
effort to the post.  Newly minted Directors include Jack
Roop, Dennis Grant, Dereck Rhoddy, Charles Bowers and Mark
Kennedy – their willingness to take on these important
volunteer roles is very encouraging.   Other Directors are
the afore-mentioned Rutherford, Brian Sheppard, Dale
Miller, Bruce Leck, Lyle Carter, Mike and Donald (Pibb)
Henderson.  The Board would like to publicly thank
long-serving outgoing Directors Don Fisher, Kevin Clarke,
and Jeff Dickey for meritorious service over a number of
years.
The BMC will once again be sponsoring the Annual Christmas Decorating Contest
– the judges will travel all the streets, avenues,
roads and lanes of the area on December 23rd so be
sure to have your lights on to impress the judges – the
winners will be announced in the January Eagle.  The Men’s
Club have decorated a tree and the giant star at the
Northeast quadrant of the “corner” to add festive spirit
to that area.  There is no word yet if Brookes VanTassell
will decorate the famous lilac bush which he has planted
and replanted several times over this year – as it seems
particularly susceptible to upset by the wind.   Maybe
Brookes better not put his best ornaments on that bush!?
There are many holiday events coming up – we
will list as many as we are aware of….The All Around the Circle Seniors dinner
will be held a week early this year on December 14
at noon at the Sportsplex – come enjoy a turkey dinner
prepared by the Middle Stewiacke Church ladies.
On Wednesday December 15 at 7:00 PM
South Colchester Academy music program will present a
Holiday Concert featuring the following groups:
the Grade 7 band classes and the Grade 8 guitar classes,
the SCA Jazz combo, the Beginner Band featuring bands from
the feeder elementary schools, and works from the Grade
11-12 music class.  Come experience the wonderful program
put together by new music teacher Steve Cameron at SCA .
On Friday December 17 at 7 PM the
choir of the Brookfield Baptist Church will present the
Christmas Cantata titled “Wonderful Joy” in the
auditorium; a free will offering will be accepted and used
to support the breakfast program in the Brookfield
Schools.   The highly anticipated Food Bank Concert will
be held at the Knox United Sanctuary on Sunday December 19
at 7:00 – this features excellent displays of talent by
musicians and singers. Donations of food or cash for the
food bank are welcome.  The Brookfield Garden Club is on
hiatus but will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of January –
watch the January Eagle for time and location.  The Junior
Elks hockey team , after a very slow start, have heated up
the NS Junior Hockey League, and recently defeated the
league lending Bay Ducks on the road.  The Elks are now
11-9.  Their upcoming home schedule at the Sportsplex
includes games on Tuesday, December
14 vs. East Hants, and Tuesday January 4 vs. Windsor.

Feel free to join us at
the BMC Christmas party on December 20 at 7:30 PM at
the Fire Station.

December 2008 Vol. 18 Issue 4

The bells will soon be pealing,
the
Christmas lights blinking, and the carolers carolling, as the Christmas
season has descended on Brookfield.  We eagerly look forward to this
time of year, as among all the festivities and kindnesses, it heralds a
return to the area of family and friends.  The giving spirit is perhaps
better exemplified in Brookfield than most other communities, as our
citizens are notorious for lending a helping hand.  The Brookfield
Men’s
Club will have their annual Christmas party meeting on Monday,
December
15
at the Brookfield Fire Hall – all are welcome to come and
enjoy the
merriment and fine food; a reminder to bring a gift valued at not more
than $10 for the gift exchange, and a non perishable
item for the food
bank.  President Larry will sound the gong at 7:30 PM.

The BMC were the guests of the
Brookfield Fire Department at their November meeting and Chief Rod
Nielsen and crew put on an informative program and a delicious lunch.
The BMCers were very pleased at the Fire Department’s hospitality, and
with their ongoing support for providing a location for the BMC
meetings.  The Brookfield Men’s Club will again sponsor the Christmas
Decorations Contest – the intrepid judging committee will travel every
by-way in the GBA, including Shortts Lake, Pleasant Valley, Forest Glen
to select the winners.  Judging will be done on December 22 – we will
publish the winners in the January Eagle.  BMCer Win Matheson,
devastated by the announcement that his beloved Trailer Park Boys
series has wrapped up, has taken to another type of star-gazing.  He
has
been transfixed by the celestial conjunction that has so highlighted
our southwest heavens recently, as the rare occurrence that brings
Jupiter, Venus, and our crescent moon into tight (visually anyway)
convergence.  He’s not sure if there is any linkage between the Advent
Season, the brilliance in the sky, and the Three Wise (??!) Men on TV –
maybe a Messiah is needed to solve the gridlock in Parliament!

Congratulations are in order to
Joel
and Juliet Campbell who welcomed a baby boy (Porter) to their home in
Monte Viste on Grand Lake.  Joel is known to many as the hard – hitting
Elks third baseman and an outstanding golfer.  He is the son of Brian
and Gwen (Cooke) Campbell and the grandson of Eloise Yorke.  Jay Shoot
and Marta MacDonald, daughter of Brian and Cherie (Rector) Mac Donald,
gave Muriel Smith, Danny and Audrey MacDonald a new
great-granddaughter, Nevaeh, in Windsor.  Shane (Pete’s and Vicki’s
son)
Sutherland became engaged to Brittany Allum.  Jim and Blanche Wilson,
residents of the Brandt Lane apartment complex, were thrilled when
their granddaughter Katie Pettipas of East Chezzetcook received her
Master’s degree in Social Work.  A big round of applause to Bill and
Fran Sears on the celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary.  Sons
Brian and wife Marlene, William and wife Susan, along with the two
grandchildren were there, as well as many of the Sears’ friends.  Bill
was a long time educator and administrator at SCHS and BJHS, and gave a
large number of the area’s players their first start in organized
hockey; as well as being the long time leader of the 569 Colonel
G.N.Henderson Air Cadet Squadron – well done!  Donna Matheson’s mother
Merle Nelson was feted by countless friends on her 100th birthday

there is no slowing Merle – she’s setting sail for 110, and who would
bet against her?!  19 grade IX students from SCA participated in the
"Tech Genius Automation Challenge" organized by the Chigecto Central
Regional School Board and the Truro campus of the Nova Scotia Community
College. Each team had to design and create a training model
prototype for a new "Electo-Mechanical Program" at the college. The
model had to have a minimum of four actions and reactions, and the
teams had to create an effective presentation whereby they market their
prototype to an NSCC representative.  Congratulations to the marketing
award winner Jessie Langille, engineering award winners Ashley Palmer
and Brittany Robinson, and overall team winners Brandi Newman and Cody
Locke (son of Steve and Krista Locke).  Three SCA athletes represented
the school well at the Provincial Cross-Country Championships – they
were local lass Caitlyn Stewart, Ian Shupe and Olivia Giffen.
The SCA
Senior Girls Volley ball team finished in a tie for first at the
Northumberland Regional Championships – they were placed second by
virtue of a tie breaker.  They, along with the Athletic Department and
Leadership class, did a fantastic job hosting the provincial
championship.  The Wolves were ousted in the semi – finals by eventual
champions Bridgewater High.  Team members include Seniors Bailey
Campbell and Sarah Wort as well as Annalyse Myers, Dezaray Hart,
Samantha Barr, Caitlyn Stewart, Marlee Geddes, Carley O’Neill,
Stephanie Prest, Amber MacLean-Hawes, Caitland Read, Taylor Clarke,
Emelye Porter, and Coach Teri Kennedy. The SCA Senior Boys Volleyball
team advanced through a qualifying tournament to the provincials, held
in Tusket, and won by host Par-en-Bas.  Coach Tim Delaney’s Wolves
included Seniors Justin White, Michael Weatherbie, Patrick Durkee,
Derrick Graham, Myles Coldwell, and underclassmen Kyle White, Alex
Delaney, Evan Chaplin, Brandon Verboom, Cody Smith, Jesse Eldershaw and
Simon Rathje.  Former Wolves also made their mark at the university
level, Joel Sutherland was a member of the SMU soccer Huskies who had a
fine year, and Leah MacNeill, Erin Durkee and Melaine Sexsmith all
kicked the ball this season for the Dal Tigers.  Caila Henderson was
recently named Athlete of the Week at Mount Allison University, and won
the same citation from the Conference (ACAA) for her exploits on the
Mounties volleyball court.

The Men’s Club would like to
extend
a formal thank you to Club President Reverend Larry Harrison and
indomitable member/Treasurer Bob Lawrence for their fantastic job in
organizing another classy Remembrance Day ceremony.  A large throng
attended the Veteran’s Memorial and very much appreciated the
respectful ceremony.  Thanks also to the youth groups in attendance,
and
a special tip of the hat to the South Colchester Academy band led by
Holly Hartlin and Katherine Campbell.  It was great to see many former
residents including "Big" Dan MacDonald and Craig Hamilton back in
Brookfield laying memorial wreaths.  Applause should also be directed
to
Knox’ United Church Women’s group, who once again organized the
wonderful Christmas House Tours throughout the village.  This is
certainly a highlight in the area and draws many people into our
community.  Special thanks goes to those who opened their homes – Dawn
Fougere on Carter Road, Art and Jan Peck on West Shortts Lake Road, and
Chris and Amanda (Walters) Cornelius of the Creamery Brook Stables.
These residences and business were beautifully decorated for the
Christmas season and special mention must be made of the Miniature
Village displayed by Edyie Teas in the Fire Hall – it was remarkable!
As usual, the Historic Train Station and Knox Hall were nicely
appointed.  There were also wreaths and Christmas socks done for the
Christmas Index Program – a terrific job done by all involved.

Though the schedule will soon
pause
for the Christmas Season break, (there are home
games
at the Sportsplex
on December 9 and 16), the
excitement level at the Brookfield Junior
Elks hockey games is at an elevated
level.  The Nova Scotia Junior
League is extremely competitive this year, and more nights than not the
spectators at the Sportsplex are treated to Overtime and / or
shoot-outs to decide the games!  Coach Josh Boulton’s Elks include
local
South Colchester MHA products Captain Ike Burgess, Josh Taylor, Coady
Read, Avery Withrow, Justin Smith, Jimmy Scullion, Jay Duffy, Catlin
Staples, Chris and Doug Armsworthy.  From the Truro MHA are Novaro
Mentis, Jacob Curry, Andrew Betts, Lee Davidson, Robert MacNevin,
Brandon MacLean and Jason Lamb; and from East Hants MHA are Kody Blois,
Travis Gibbon, Darcy Gillis and former Elk softballer Terry Anthony’s
son, Matt.

While the wonder-horse
Somebeachsomewhere created a major stir in interest in harness racing,
many in our area have eagerly watched another precocious trotter, part
owned by former Brookfield resident Gail (Archibald) and her husband
Ron MacLellan of Bathhurst (along with NHL Hall-of- Famer Serge
Savard).  "Shadow Play" has won nearly $1.2 million in purses in 2008,
captured the prestigious Little Brown Jug, and chased the "Beach" all
the way home, finishing a strong second, 1 1/2 lengths back – a
fantastic showing for Gail’s gang.

We are sorry to report on the
passing of Bob Sibley – the Brookfield Christmas scene will not be as
bright without Bob’s wonderful decorations on Highway 2 north. He was a
frequent winner in the Christmas Decorations Contest.  Emma McCulloch
passed away – she was Munroe McCulloch’s mother.  Long time Middle
Stewiacke general merchant and community booster Doug Kenrick was laid
to rest.  Who can forget Doug’s fervent cheering at Elk and Elkette
ball
games?

Gerald Delaney has moved into
the
Jewers house on Carter Road.  Mike and Jenna (VanTassell) Searle have
purchased the former Elda Brown house (with a commanding view of
Trenhom’s / Crystal Lake) – always nice to have young couples re-locate
here!

Art Sears was hospitalized but
is now home and we wish him well in his recovery. Trish Nelson also
required a hospital stay.

We experienced a sizable snow
storm
in late November that encouraged some to book passage to warmer
climates.  Hopefully none had to travel West on Trans-Canada Highway
through the notorious Cobequid Pass (do you think the "Western
Alignment" chosen some 12 years ago might have been a mistake?!)
Lifetime troubadour Gordon Tucker took his multiple instrument musical
talent to Afghanistan to entertain the Canadian troops stationed in
that forlorn area – thanks Gordie, on behalf of all Canadians!  Susan
MacDonald went to New York with her mother to visit her sister.  John,
Denise, Ashley and Lucas Brimicombe, along with Blair, Patty, Alyssa
and Ethan Densmore went to Walt Disney World. Geoff Stewart and Dana
Flemming both have had large erections spring up in their back yards.
Their newly constructed garages are the envy of many men; some find
these structures even more exciting than a 4×4 truck!

Earlier we mentioned our
community’s
long and fabled history of volunteerism.  There are several
organizations that could benefit from an upturn in this activity.
Think
about some of these openings and if you could help enhance our village
by lending a hand.  The Brookfield Elementary School requires a
community member for its School Advisory Council and the SCA also
requires one from the Hilden area.  The Brookfield Fire and
Emergency
Services
have had some dwindling of their number and could use some
recharging.  As mentioned before the Brookfield Men’s Club is
always
receptive to new blood; requirements are extremely light, as their
primary focus is on fellowship, with some community projects tossed
in.
This is all relevant because the Brookfield Community Assembly
(which
also has a couple of vacancies waiting to be filled ) is in the final
stages of preparing a Provincial Community
Spirit Award Nomination
for
the village.  The BCA is collecting information from a variety of
groups
and organizations that are vital to our village, and know it is high
time that more outside our sphere are aware of the prominent role our
hundreds of volunteers play.

Mark your calendars with these
Christmas – season events.  The Brookfield
Elementary School Christmas
concert
will be held on Wednesday
December 10
.  A five course Christmas
dinner with musical entertainment
will be hosted at the Knox Church
Hall on Saturday December 13
Tickets
are available at MacQuarries
or
by calling Kaye at 673-2356.
There is limited seating, they started
with 50 tickets and several of these already have been snapped up.  Friday December 19 at 7:30 PM and December 21 at 11 AM,
the Baptist
Church Cantata
will be performed – this should not be
missed.  On Sunday
December 21 at 7 PM the Food for the Spirit Concert
,
which highlights
many of our local musicians’ talent, will be held at Knox Hall  –
admission is merely a donation to
the food bank.

There will be a Special Service at
Knox United Church on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 7 p.m.

In the
midst of the gaiety and lights of this season there are many carrying
heaviness because of a death, a separation, an illness, loss of job,
whatever.  You are invented to come and release some of the heaviness
from your mind and heart.  This is an open community invitation to all,
regardless of church involvement.
  A
Christmas Flower for a Special Christmas Service Christmas is a special
time of year; a time when we remember family and friends who have
touched our lives in one way or another.  To compliment the Special
Christmas Service on December 17, community members can buy red
poinsettias (8 inch pot) in honour or in memory of family or friends.

The poinsettias can be purchased for $20.
To order a poinsettia, please
call Kaye Retson at 673-2356 by
Sunday, December 14, 2008.

We hope all
have the happiest
possible holiday season,
and that you take the
time to greet many
friends and family that we expect in our area over the next three
weeks. Please remember to bring your
gift and food bank donation to the BMC
meeting on December 15 at the Fire Hall.

See you at the BMC!

P.O.
Box 195
Brookfield N.S., BON 1CO
October, 2007 Vol. 17 Issue 2
We cordially invited all gentlemen of the area to join the Brookfield
Men’s Club on Monday, October 15 at 7:30 PM for their monthly meeting.
This month’s meeting will be a treat as the BMCers are being hosted by
the Brookfield Fire Department at the new Fire Station – this
invariably makes for an interesting program, and even more delicious
lunch than usual. Feel free to drop in and be greeted by the new
Executive – at the September meeting Larry Harrison was elected to the
Presidency, with Austin Ross serving as Vice President. Returning to
the Secretary and Treasurer positions were Terry Henderson and Bob
Lawrence, respectively.
We are happy to report that David and Kim Monk of Edmonton are the
parents of a beautiful baby girl; look for grandparents Maxine and
Laurie Monk of Burrows Drive to head west soon! Meanwhile, first time
grandparents Dan and Lexie Stewart are bursting with pride over new
addition Claira, born to daughter Lyndin Stewart. In Hamilton, Ontario,
former Middle Stewiacke resident Fred Rutherford and his wife Peggy –
celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, Fred is brother to Don and
Lewis Rutherford and half brother to Bill and Jerry Stewart. Kally Best
of Brentwood happily accepted Chad Schrader’s engagement proposal. It
was very nice to see Angela Nelson, daughter of Barb and the late Eric,
come home to be married to Tomas Beran. The happy couple live in
Calgary. Thanks to Warren Lindsay for a kind donation to the Eagle’s
cause.
Globe trotters included Don and Jean Hamilton, who visited Ireland and
England and Myrna and Gordon (Gully ), Matheson, who embarked on
another one of their "house trading" adventures. This time their swap
took them to the antipodes of New Zealand and Australia. Andrew and
Jill Sears and Mike and Brenda Henderson, on behalf of the
International Olympic Committee, inspected past Olympic venues of
Munich and Garmisch – Partenkirchen in the Alps of Germany, as that
area considers bidding on the 2018 Winter Olympics. While on the trip
the foursome stopped at Mozart’s birthplace in Salzburg, Austria, and
attempted a melody midst the lively street music scene, but the locals
quickly told them they were one brick shy of a load vocally (you do the
math!!). Kelsey Campbell has relocated to Toronto, hoping to pursue a
career in dance, of which she has an abundance of talent. Delbert and
Shirley Comeau spent Thanksgiving in Toronto with his son Bill’s
family. Beth Maguire made a shopping trip, on behalf of Stanfield’s to
New York City – in the end, was it a demonstration of naiveté (thinking
she could get from Manhattan at 5 PM on a weekday to JFK Airport in
time for 6:30 ); or was the chance of a missed flight and one more
night in the Big Apple too appealing?
Ray Carter had knee replacement surgery, and Joan Campbell has been
seen dragging around a
foot encased in plaster. In Halifax, Geordie Dickey, son of Jim and
Donalda Dickey has been hospitalized with the mumps, which has seen his
temperature skyrocket to above 105 F. If you are in the at risk age
group, (largely thought those born between 1980 and 1990), it would be
prudent to arrange for your inoculation.
Visitors to our fair burg included Jeff Cameron’s parents, Susan and
Ken Loveland from Dutton, Ontario who came to see their new
grandson…Marg Sutherland’s daughters were home – the delightful Karen
Davis, Marilyn Fallon, and Charlene Fraser always brighten things up in
Brookfield. Another sunny face we were happy to see home was Elaine
(Ross) Healey of Wasaga Beach, Ontario visiting her siblings Shirley
Comeau and Austin Ross, and assorted nieces and nephews. Randy and
Betty Roop’s daughters and respective spouses (Pam and Sherry, Steve
Olmstead and Jay Ovsenny) were delighted to get home, not only for
Thanksgiving, but to help their parents celebrate their 35th
anniversary, and for their friend Angela’s wedding. Nice to see several
members of Wayne and Jonathan Woolfitt’s family in town to visit – they
included Wayne’s brothers Ben from Toronto, and
Kim and wife Marlene from Alberta, as well as Jonathan’s sister
Katherine and her husband Graham from England. It was very interesting
to listen to these connoisseurs of all things ovine, as their family
has a rich tradition in sheep farming. Any questions regarding wool as
a fiber, or the value of mutton and lamb as a delicious food choice was
quickly answered!
We were saddened to learn of the sudden passing in Riverview, New
Brunswick of Bruce Morrisey, husband of Irene (Carter) Morrisey. Hilden
native Bruce was quite a basketball player in his day at South
Colchester High, in the late 60’s and early 70’s, and we grieve for
Irene, as well as parents-in-law Betty and Ray Carter, and all members
of the family. Maxine (Boutilier) Deyarmond, a contemporary of Bruce’s
at South Colchester High, and former resident of Brookfield, died in
Eastville. Herb MacFarlane’s mother, Mrs. Dorothy MacFarlane died.
Shirley(Hamilton)Harrison’s husband Roy Harrison passed away in Sheet
Harbour and Arthur Peck’s mother, Shirley died in Truro. Elaine
Forsyth’s mother, Lorraine Saunders, passed away. Dot Hughes, Clare’s
wife and sister-in-law to Cauline Watson died. The Eagle expresses the
community’s sympathies to those who have lost loved ones.
At the recently concluded Nova Scotia High School Athletic Golf
Championships held at Penn Hills Golf Course outside Shubenacadie, two
South Colchester Academy golfers distinguished themselves. Alex Fleming
carded a 79 and Riley Giffen fired a nifty 81 – remember these two
young men are in Grade 10 and 9 respectively, playing against mostly
grades 11 and 12s. Other members of the SCA Wolves team who went to
Regionals in Antigonish were Cody Locke and Charlie Fleming; with only
the latter graduating, the Wolves future on the links look promising.
Alex Fleming continued to gather honors throughout the summer as he
finished third in the Nova Scotia Golf Association’s Juvenile (16 and
under) championship and attended the Atlantic Future Links Tournament
as well, and also won the BGC Match Play Crown.
Mike and Dane Henderson won the Low Gross title for the second division
in the NSGA’s Family Classic Tournament in Annapolis Royal. The
Brookfield Golf Club repatriated the Shaw Cup, bringing it home by
defeating Fox Hollow Golf Club of Stewiacke 14.5 to 9.5 in the 9th
Annual Interclub match play competition. While Mike Weir was making an
awesome showing on the television inside, at the BGC it was reported
that all the viewers were out on the balcony watching the Shaw Cup
drama unfold. Team members include: Steve Locke and Andy Peters who
each posted 3- 0 records, Richard White, Darrell Penney, Scott
Labrador, who aced the ultra-difficult #15 hole during the competition,
Mike Henderson, Ted Sodero, Mike Penny, Robert Putnam, Derek Meek, Cory
Sutherland and Dan Dean. The win gives Brookfield a 5-4 series lead
over Fox Hollow. The 21st Annual Brookfield Lotta Truck Festival grand
prize winner was Allan MacLean of Happy Valley, Labrador. He chose the
$110,000 first prize over the Freightliner. Paulette Chiasson of
Timberlea, Douglas Creelman of Fall River, Murray Davis of Hantsport
all won their choice of vehicles or cash.
The Mud Bog at Pleasant Valley Motocross was a massive success and the
Cooke family are hoping it will become more than an annual event. We
must thank all for the amazing success of the Terry Fox Run. This years
event surpassed $32,000 in funds raised for cancer research (up over
$2,000 from last year) and is indeed a remarkable sum. Many people
worked very hard to make it happen- there were 296 participants, 76
volunteers, and 26 morale- boosting supporter in the Special Terry’s
Taxi’s. Audrey and Hugh Carter’s picturesque property at the top of
Carter Road leading to Carter Falls gleamed in the sunshine. Afterwards
a delicious BBQ followed at Ed Creelman Park, with top notch
entertainment provided by local group Heartbeat, which showcased the
musical talents of Russell and Sandra MacCallum, Barb Schofield and Jim
Yorke. Top fund raiser of the area, who else but Wayne Woolfitt, led
the walkers carrying the Terry Fox flag, followed by many of Terry’s
Team members (who are cancer survivors) behind them came bikers,
walkers, the Junior B Elks Hockey Team, runners, strollers, dogs etc!
Amanda (Walters) Cornelius has opened her new business, Creamery Brook
Stables, opposite the school’s soccer field. Contact Amanda for more on
fine equine boarding and care.
There is a report circulating that a raucous "Elvis" party was held
recently at Shortt’s Lake…rumors suggest the decor and music was
fabulous, Herb McCallum was unparalleled as a dancer, and Susan
VanTassell displayed an all-encompassing knowledge about everything
Elvis, right down to the size of his………shoes!
The Brookfield Junior Elks have started their season in the Nova Scotia
Junior B Hockey league – they can be found at home in the Sportsplex
most Tuesday evenings at 7:30 – watch the Sportsplex or at the
Pharmasave, Bakery, Clover Farm or Tim Horton’s for postings. Come and
support the Elks; they provide a great chance for locals to play a high
level of hockey. The Brookfield Curling Club will be having its Open
House later in October; watch for details. Junior and Little Rock
curling will start the first week of November for ages 7 and up.
Further notification will be posted throughout the schools. Adult
curling is available on 5 evenings a week to fit anyone’s schedule, as
well as at least one morning session – stop in and enjoy the
surroundings at the continually evolving BCC. With the start of hunting
season fast approaching, it is time for all to get their Brookfield
Elks Sports Draw tickets. This year’s raffle prize list is fantastic
featuring a GMC ton truck, an ATV, Sobey’s $2000 gift certificate, or
cash equivalents for the prizes. The Grand Prize draw will be held at a
Junior Elks game in early November, so get your tickets soon. This is
the principal fundraiser of the year for the Brookfield Athletic
Association which provides support and facilities to many different
activities and athletes in the community.
The BAA also has launched the very popular NHL weekly hockey pools –
for only $2 you can test your knowledge against your friends and reap
some handsome rewards. Contact any member of the Elks ball or hockey
organization for more information or tickets, which are also available
at Roop’s Esso or online via the community website.
It is expected the Brookfield Men’s Club will again lead the street
patrol on Halloween – volunteers are welcome to join the men for a few
hours of fresh air starting at 9 PM on the 31st at the United Church.
We have been very impressed with the support and respect the youth have
given not only this group but the community at large over the past
number of Halloweens and hope it continues.
The Christmas season really kicks off in Brookfield with the Christmas
Home Tours which draws folks from near and far. Homes are still needed
for the tours to proceed on November 30 and December 1. If you are
interested in showing your decorated home, please call Donna at
673-2591 or Judy 673-2427.
The hoped for sewer line extension for Highway 2 North (beyond Whidden
Road) will be on the agenda at Colchester County Council on Thursday
October 11 at 7 PM. It is hoped a large presence of community support
will be a factor towards a positive outcome to this important issue to
all Brookfielders.
Mothers in the area who are looking for ways to stretch their food

September, 2007 Vol. 17 Issue 1

The Brookfield Men’s Club will commence its 71st season of operation on Monday September 17th at 7:30 PM in the basement of the Baptist Church. The BMC has been providing service to the community for those many years as well as a monthly evening of fellowship. All in the area are invited to come and enjoy the proceedings.

It’s been a busy four months since the Eagle last took flight; nowhere more so than in the maternity wards. Without a doubt South Colchester Academy class of 2025 will be a robust one, as babies abounded. The primary teacher at Brookfield Elementary is already girding for the influx in September 2012. Baby boys were everywhere it seemed. Happy bundles came to Chris Crowe and Julie Thompson, Jonathan and Gail Keirstead, Brent and Kelly Countway, Travis and Faith (Buott) Rogers, Darcy and Margo (Creelman) Merriweather, Rob and Joelle Bezanson, stand-out BMC member Jeff and Angie Cameron, Todd and Kelly (McCoul) Boyd, Elk stars Brent and Meredith Harrison, Randy and Brandy Frame, and Brookes VanTassell and Lisa Taggart. Beautiful baby girls were welcomed by Paul and Katie (Fisher) Chisholm, Rich and Sarah Taylor of Shortt’s Lake, Blair and Krista (MacFarlane) Tucker in Newfoundland and Julie Locke and Clint Oakley. Several couples exchanged matrimonial vows including SCA teacher and standout Elk third baseman Darren Retson who exchanged "I do’s" with Jenny Maguire… Wade O’Leary and Krista Barnhill were wed, as were John Hingley and Carrie Allinson… Other knot tiers were Ian Jamieson and Erin Patton…Chris (Flash) Fisher and Danielle Von Beveren… Monique Paradise and Steve Anthony…Chris Hamilton and Sharon Patterson… and in Hong Kong Lisa Illsley wed Jazz Cado. Watching the nuptials with a bemused look was BMC emeritus member Vic Burrows – he and wife Gerry celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary!! Herm and Barb Smith marked 50 years together and Bob and Shirley Henry celebrated 45 years – well done!!!

Visitors were a big part of the summer; just some we encountered were Mary and Wally Atwood, Marlene Mingo, Chris and Lisa (Hingley) George, Warren, and son Mike Lindsay from Calgary – Warren has relocated to Truro; Marion McDonald’s sons Bert and Greg along with their families… Julie, Jack, Noah, Molly Hsu and Laura Henderson came from Vancouver, Jack, Carol Brendan and Mirren Campbell came from Leeds to visit Jack’s mum Eloise Yorke and other family members. Jennet (Harvey) and Sinead Molloy visited from Belfast. Relatives from the Philippines visited Greenhalgh’s on Carter Road. The Burnett’s welcomed James, Trudy, Jake, Emma and Kathy to Densmore Lane; David (Ding) Ross and Jamie Works were home from Alberta, as were Kirk MacKenzie and Jimmy Benvie, James Carter and Laura Niedermayer, and Mark and Michelle Walters. Rob Carter was home to Lyle and Susan’s from Montreal, and Tracey Graham, Ed and Edna’s granddaughter came from Ontario. Ian and Deborah

(Pratt) Flewelling and family were home, and John Thompson visited Ron and Marilyn Morrell; Brenda Geddes’ sister Debbie came from Florida and her daughter Teresa came from Arizona, Bob Roop visited from Florida; also at Randy and Betty’s were Pam and Steve Olmstead and Jay and Sherry Ovsenny. Jason Ross ventured down from Nunavut to visit Linda and Donald. Fred and Dale Cameron, Jeff’s parents, came from Dutton, Ontario, to see the new grandson. New

residents on the Upper Brookfield Road include Tracey Taylor. Andrew and Becky Roop and Howard and Evelyn Lecco. Earl Kennedy has moved in with sister Hazel on Carter Rd. – we welcome you to Brookfield! Robert (Ibbett) Henderson was home with children Riley and Courtney to visit Terry and Mary while here he left a very generous donation to the Eagle, and praised the BMC for keeping him "close to home" despite the 2000 miles separation.

We were shocked and saddened to hear of the passing in Halifax at a much too young age of former Brentwood resident Liz Allaway. Jessie Morton of Stewiacke East, with many friends in the area, passed away, as did former Brookfield Rural High School teacher Jean (Crowe) (Leier) Steeves in Stewiacke. Cauline Watson’s sister Helen St. Paul died in Truro, and we were saddened by the sudden passing of Gerry and Shirley Nelson’s son Stanley. Dorothy Redden, the mother of Glenna Murphy, Gail Wright, and Elsie Locke passed away. Winston Embree, Erma Conrad’s companion passed away in Truro. Our sympathies to all who mourn.

At the BMC final meeting of last season in May, Austin Ross was voted the winner of the Al Campbell Memorial Award as the BMC Man of the Year – well done Austin! He is always eager to participate and volunteer. Inscribed on the Elden Brenton Bowl for perfect attendance were Win and John Matheson, Bob Lawrence, Mike and Terry Henderson, Art Lindsay, Don Harvey, Frank Locke, and Elmer Archibald. Congratulations to Jen Fisher, daughter of Terry and Joan (Burrows) Fisher, who graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Heidi Cooke won her 6th Canadian Ladies Motocross Championship, and her cousin Patrick Stewart was named the All Star First Baseman at the Canadian Junior Softball Championship. Club Champions at the Brookfield Golf Club were Steve Locke (Mens) and Chris Bernard in (Ladies) and Mark Dean as Junior, Donald Ross and Judy Matheson were the Senior winners. The Brookfield Elks had a successful season in the provincial league on the ball diamond – much thanks is given to coach Donald "Pibby" Henderson and Manager Josh McCallum, not only the work with the ball team, but also for heading up impressive renovation projects which saw Elks Park come alive this year. Pibby and Josh were recognized at a double header in July. Jason Sanford of the Elks was named to the All-Star team at the Canadian Senior Men’s Tournament in St. John’s Newfoundland where the Elks compiled a 2-6 record. Carly Levy and Caila Henderson won the bronze medal at the Canada Nation Wide Science fair in May. At the graduation ceremony at South Colchester Academy in June, major multiple award winners were Katelyn Bessette, Nicole Davis, Lauren Fiander, Chad Graham, Katelyn MacKenzie, Ben Roy, Sarah Rutherford, Leanne Shupe, Megan Smith and Matt Leck, who also won the Governor General’s Medal. Athletes of the Year were Shanda Cox and Andrew Ferris and at the Junior High level Annalyse Myers and Devon Duykers. The 3D award winners were Brette Holland and Caila Henderson. On behalf of the community the Eagle extends sincere thank yous to all who volunteered and or participated in any form at the 11th Annual Coming Home to Brookfield celebrations. It seems unlikely but each year this event seems to out-strip previous ones. The Brookfield Athletic Association would also like to thank all who attended and helped build, operate, and deconstruct the Whing Ding which was the site of large crowds this year. The Terry Fox Golf Tournament in mid August generated some $14,000 due to the tireless efforts of the community volunteers and the kind support of its patrons. All should take a bow for their involvement these community minded ventures.

Upcoming events – speaking of Terry Fox, the Brookfield version of the annual Run goes on Sunday September 16th at 1:00 PM at the top of Carter Road. The scenic location has turned out to be a smash hit and we expect a large turn out this year. All are welcomed at the BBQ at Creelman Park at 3:00 PM. Also a reminder for people to turn in their "Walk Around the World" tracking sheets at the Terry Fox Run – hopefully this initiative, launched on Canada Day, will reach its’ goal. On the same day at the other end of the village the Pleasant Valley MotoCross track will be hosting Mug Bogs, featuring the biggest trucks in Nova Scotia playing in the mud. Drop down and check out that action. The South Colchester Academy Fitness Center will again be open to the public, resuming September 24. This year’s dates will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Thursdays from 5-7 PM. There are attractive monthly and drop in rates, and to sustain this program we must have a minimum of 12 participants on a monthly basis. The facility is excellent and the training is professional, why not join and help keep this valued resource in the community. There will also be stability ball classes on Thursdays from 7-8 with a discounted rate to regular members of the Fitness Center. This activity is available thanks to the enhancements made back at the time of school construction by community groups like the Brookfield Athletic Association and the Rate Payers of South Colchester, and any groups are encouraged to make further use of the terrific facility we have in the village. Contact Terri at 897-3155 for more information. By the time you read this, school will be well underway at both SCA and Brookfield Elementary – we are pleased to hear that Debbie Eddy has returned to BES, this time as a full time principal. Any who have had contact with her, be they parents, children, teaching and or support staff speak highly of Ms. Eddy’s leadership.

Decorate your yard for the fall with an original Scarecrow, use your imagination to win prizes for Most Traditional, Most Unique, Community Spirit, Scariest and Best Overall.
